Fear and Trembling
Daily Devotional for December 18th
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12
There are a lot of things in our world that have changed. The things that people value today are much different than in the past. The majority of people used to live their lives with a common kindness toward their fellow man. The Christian community has even changed. You may remember a day in your life when Christian people lived and walked very orderly before the Lord. It was not to try to be seen as a great moral person, but there was such a desire to walk and please God.
Today though, there are not as many who desire to walk and please God. The single greatest reason why this has happened is because there isn’t an awareness of consequences than there used to be. You can’t live your life in wickedness and not expect to reap from what you’ve sown. If you have truly been born again, then Christ lives inside you. And if Christ lives inside you, then your daily moral walk in this world will never be like it was before.
Paul said for us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. This means that we are to approach our Christian lives with the attitude that our steps, choices and decisions will have consequences. Great consequences if we order our behavior according to the word of God, and devastating consequences should we continue to walk in sin. Has godly fear left our hearts? Do we still believe that the Lord chastens those who He loves?
Could it be that when you look over your life that you see that your life is a result of bad decisions that have been made? You have the choice today to change that. You cannot do it by yourself, but you can return to the Lord who will abundantly pardon and give you the opportunity to start again. When Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness, He gives us a new start. Commit today to turn your life over to the Lord and work out your salvation, as Paul said, with fear and trembling. Start today to sow seeds of obedience unto the Lord. You will find that it is in this path of walking before the Lord that Jesus will walk hand in hand with you every step of the way.
