The Hour and Power of Darkness
Daily Devotional for October 27th
Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.…Luke 22:52-53
In this age we are living in, we must all come to understand that there is a tug of war that exists in the spirit. We may not always be able to discern the direction of attacks, but the realization that the kingdom of darkness will push against us is a given. There are also times when the power of darkness rages stronger at some times than at others. Those who’ve lived for God for a time have definitely noticed these things.
When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane’s garden, He knew that there was about to be an onslaught from the enemy. It was now there hour! It was Satan’s time to attack! He knew the army of hell was marching for Him. Sadly, the three men He had asked to watch with Him did not see the same urgency and severity of the moment. He commanded them Watch! This was a military command. This meant the enemy was approaching. When we discern the hour of darkness is before us, we must learn to watch and pray; to stand on guard and be ready for the devil’s attacks. Sadly most of the time we fall because we are caught off-guard. This is because we are not watching. Why do we not watch during these times?
He added that ye enter not into temptation. This reveals one of Satan’s strategies. Temptation comes into your life at a strategic time. Make no mistake friend, you’ll be tempted in the time that you are needed in the kingdom of God the most. Satan will distract you with sin so that your relationship with God is compromised leaving you with no power in prayer to fight against his schemes. His strategy is to spiritually disarm you just prior to making his attack. The temptation may not always be the same, but the result Satan is after in your life is spiritual sleep.
The power of darkness causes our eyes to become heavy. If we are under the influence of darkness, then it will become very evident in our lives. The bible speaks of a spiritual sleep. It comes the same ways as physical sleep; abiding, walking and continually dwelling in the darkness. We may walk in the light though. During the Halloween season, there is a focus on the evil spirit world. TV channels air horror movies while most commercials have a wickedly dark slant to their advertisements. All of these things reveal a push into darkness. An hour and power of darkness. It is in these times that Satan can attempt to make himself seem such a powerful figure. He will never be compared to God. He is not even worthy to be mentioned along side God. His power is so limited. The only reason we fall for his schemes is when we take our eyes off of Jesus.
