He that Hath an Ear

Daily Devotional for September 27th

Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches;   Revelation 2:16:17a

Why is it that some people talk about hearing the Holy Spirit speak to them while others do not? Maybe you’ve experienced moments when the Holy Spirit spoke so intensely while at others He seemed silent.  God desires to speak unto His children but there are times when we cannot hear the voice of God.  Jesus said, my sheep know my voice… Hearing the voice of the Lord should not be an uncommon occurrence, but your life should continually be lived in such a way that you can hear the Lord when He speaks.

The church world today largely suffers from the inability to hear and see spiritual things. Notice the verse does not mean that the people do not have ears, only that their ears cannot hear.  This is spiritual deafness.  This verse, along with several others, lend clear evidence that some people in the churches would have ears to hear what the Spirit was saying, while others tragically would not.

The Word of God is His instructions to us for righteousness and doctrine and should be understood that it is God breathed. 2 Timothy 3:16  The Lord does speak to each of us individually giving us encouragement and personal direction.  We see this many times throughout the bible.  We need to spiritually abide in a place where we can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit when He speaks.  Sadly, many people do not know how.  The question is; how do we do that?

Those who have ears to hear are those whose lives are walked in obedience and separated from sin. If you notice Matthew 13:15 the condition of the heart determines the condition of the ears and eyes so if you cannot hear the Holy Spirit or see spiritually, then it is because the heart needs cleansed.  This is why the church needs revival so much.  In our daily lives we sadly do not confront sin.  We allow so many things that causes our hearts to wax gross.  Sin is forever a separator between us and God.

This is why repentance is the remedy. Notice Jesus sent instructions to the churches to Repent. Why does it seem as if the Holy Spirit no longer speaks to you?  It is not that He is not speaking, but that your heart needs cleansing.  Confess your sin, repent and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all unrighteousness.  Once you do this from a sincere heart, cleansing will take place and your ears will open and you will once again be able to hear what the Spirit is saying unto you.
