When God Remains Silent

Daily Devotional for July 14th

Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.  Psalm 83:1-2

As we look at our daily walk with the Lord, there are a few things that are very evident. Our Christian life goes through seasons.  We see times of refreshing in our life when God is so near unto us.  We seem to be so submerged in the Spirit of God that we dare not doubt He is near.  During these times we really receive great strength, encouragement and great depth in the word of God.

But there are also times of silence. Why is it that God seems so near unto us at times, while at other times it seems that the heavens are brass and we call out to Him but there is no immediate answer, encouragement, or strength?  We realize that God proves us at times.  Deuteronomy 8:3.  When God remains silent, it makes us uncomfortable.  Some people want to say that God was not there for them in their time of need.  God desires to grow your faith.  He wants to build you in such a way that you know whether God answers you right away or a few days later, He is still faithful.

Like all of us, David had to endure through times of silence. During the time of the Maccabees between the last prophet Malachi and John the Baptist, there was about four hundred years of silence.  The world sat in a condition of spiritual darkness.  There seemed to be no word from the Almighty.  Why did Jesus not come to Lazarus when Mary and Martha sent for Him?  It is because Jesus had a greater miracle in mind for Lazarus than healing!  He wanted everyone to witness God’s resurrection power!

Don’t be discouraged when God remains silent for a season. It’s during these times that God may want you to seek Him.  He may want you to dig deeper in His word.  It may be that God desires to see if your love for Him is pure and that you’re willing to endure a few days or weeks of silence because you love Him!  Finally, if He is not answering you, then there may be a greater work He desires to do in you or through you than what your praying.  Keep your trust in the Lord.  Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.  Psalm 50:3.
