Don’t Give Away Your Oil
Daily Devotional for July 13th
And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. Matthew 25:6-8
In navigating through this life, there are many tactics that Satan will use to bring you down. If he can’t get you to fall into some gross sin, he will attempt to get you exalted in pride. If not pride, then he will try to place unforgiveness toward those who have wronged you. But out of all of the devil’s strategies, there is one that seems to be successful when the rest have failed.
Although we are called to love everyone, we must also be wise. We must be aware of the people that enter our lives. In your attempts to minister and fulfill God’s call in your life, you have to be on guard against those who the devil will send your way for the purpose of draining the spiritual life completely out of you. People do not have malicious intentions, but the effect is still the same.
If you notice in this scripture, five foolish virgins were unprepared for the bridegroom. In an attempt to get prepared, they did not seek oil from the source; they sought oil from the five wise virgins. The wisdom of the wise virgins allowed them to not be drained of what they had. Do you realize that Satan sends some people to drain you? Instead of going to the Lord themselves, they will go to those who are spiritual and rely on those people to carry them to victory instead of going to God themselves. The Lord desires you to help people but that help involves leading that person to Jesus. You are not anyone’s source! The same way you came to a place of victory was to come to Jesus. This is the same way everyone else must receive.
We must protect the oil supply that God has given us. Is it possible to give away your oil? The answer is yes! If you’re not careful, Satan will drain your spiritual strength. If you find yourself constantly drained or pulled down spiritually, it’s possible that Satan has used someone to deplete your oil container. We must be wise in our ministering. While seeking to help people, do not let them rely on you or your own strength. Instead, lead them to the same fountain that you continually draw from. In doing so, the five wise virgins will teach the foolish virgins to be wise.
