Sailing in Disobedient Waters

Daily Devotional for June 13th

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Jonah 1:3-4

Contrary to what many people say, obedience to the Lord is essential in our everyday lives. Many people portray walking in obedience to God as an option that we may do or not; and that without consequence.  Of a truth we must understand that our walk in fellowship with God can be hindered and even broken based upon our willingness or unwillingness to obey Him.

Jonah may not have realized the consequences of his disobedience when he boarded a ship sailing to Tarshish. Although God means no harm to anyone, He does deal with us as a father does to his children.  When we walk in disobedience, can we honestly expect to avoid discipline?  Jonah understood quickly  that obedience is the best course of action for anyone when it comes to the Lord.

Do you realize the souls that are at stake and the responsibility you have to win them to Christ? Jonah had a few problems with going to Nineveh.  Was he troubled that it was a gentile city instead of Israel?  Did he desire to see the judgment of God come to them? Probably not, but whatever his reason was, it was not worth the storm that would arise in his own life.  Many people today are in storms of their own doing; storms of disobedience.  Although some would question why the Lord would bring this about in Jonah’s life, we must realize a very broad truth.  That truth is our obedience brings blessings, but our disobedience will bring discipline.

When you see hard times come in your own life, do you automatically view it as an attack from the enemy? Sometimes hard times come as discipline from the Lord due to our lack of submission to His will.  If you know what the will of God is in your life but you are not currently walking in it, why?  Are you riding a ship of disobedience?  Are there storms raging around you and your wondering why?  If so, your storm won’t cease until you cast yourself overboard into the hands of God to do His will.  God can take you wherever you are right now and carry you to the location He desires you to walk in obedience. Submit yourself to Jesus afresh today.  You’ll find that the waters are much smoother when your sailing in the will of God.
