Enduring Sound Doctrine

Daily Devotional for June 6th

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, 2 Timothy 4:2-4

When we think of enduring, our minds immediately go to the idea of suffering through great adversities such as sickness, catastrophes, family tragedies, and other destructive world events. We tend to think of adversity that provokes us to weather the storm or battle until it is over.  We seldom think of doctrinal truths taught in the word of God.  What exactly did Paul mean anyway by “endure sound doctrine?”

Enduring involves suffering through something we do not desire. This verse actually describes a struggle that exists between our will and the word of God.  Sound doctrine will cause us to become uncomfortable at times.  God’s word is designed to rub you wrong every now and then.  It will get into your living.  Some doctrinal truths in the word of God will make the most sincere Christian uncomfortable.  We have carnality so engrained within us that God’s word illuminates what we are not aware of.

2 Peter 3:16 teaches that unstable men and women will wrestle against some truths that are preached. One of the greatest means of continuing in sound doctrine is that we do not become isolated from other believers.  Notice these men heaped to themselves teachers.  What’s interesting about this is that they either removed sound teaching or removed themselves from it.  Either way, sound doctrine was rejected.  You can become deceived by false teachers if you isolate yourself from biblical counsel and teaching.  One of the tell tale signs of false doctrine is that it permits sin or lusts remain in a person.

Paul goes on to say that a time will come when sound doctrine will no longer be suffered. Men’s lusts will cause them to turn from the truth unto something false.  Instead of men allowing the word of God to change them, they would eventually pile up teachers who would teach doctrines that would allow their lusts to remain in their hearts instead of allowing the word to dig up their sin that would produce repentance.

When you read the word of God and encounter certain scriptures that plow into your living, how do you react? Do you automatically adjust your life so that it realigns to the word of God?  Do you ignore it?  The Lord desires you to walk in liberty and freedom from sin.  Sin will beset you; it will shackle you.  Instead of turning from the truth as others, endure through the doctrine you know to be the truth.  There is a great blessing of victory when we allow the word of God to change us.
