Faith is the Substance
Daily Devotional for May 10th
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Hebrews 11:1-2
Out of all the things that you need as a child of God, faith is at the top. We are not referring to a faith that only believes in the existence of God though. We are rather referring to a faith that believes on the Lord to answer prayer and deliver. Most of the time, this is where the problem comes in. We have no issue with believing that God exists, but we cannot bring ourselves to believe that God will answer prayer on our behalf.
In Hebrews 11, we are given the bible definition of faith. Notice that faith is the substance of that thing hoped for. This means that the thing hoped for cannot be received until the substance is obtained. You cannot get what you are hoping for until you have the substance; which is faith. Faith is also the evidence of things not seen. Similarly, you cannot receive that thing that is currently unseen (the object of your prayer) unless you have the evidence first. Faith is that evidence.
When we pray, we have no problem laying out our petition to the Lord. Where we err is when we do not receive the answer to that prayer by faith. We want rather to wait until the answer is seen with our eyes or placed in our possession before we believe we have received it. No answer will come this way. We must rather receive it by faith alone in order for it to come unto us. When the disciples attempted to cast out a devil from a young boy, their attempt failed. The came to Jesus with the question, “why could we not cast it out?” Jesus answer was clear; “Because of your unbelief:”
Faith is not easy. Having faith requires you to enter a position where the unbelieving world will laugh at your faith. When you stand and say “God will take care of this problem in my life” or “I’m confident that God will answer my prayer,” then you can expect the devil to resist you. But it is in this same position of faith where God has promised to do great things in our life. Are you hoping for God to do something in your life? You must first have the substance; which is faith. Are you looking for something unseen? You must first have the evidence; which is faith.
