Insignia of a Disciple
Daily Devotional for April 11th
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:34-35
Many world leaders have branded their followers in some unique way to identify them to the world. Their mark is a symbol for the world to see that shows where their allegience lies. Followers of Hitler were identified with the Nazi symbol; the swastika. Today, every policeman and woman wear proudly a badge that reveals who they are or what they do. The proud service men and women wear the flag of their country which proclaims the country they represent.
Love is the singular mark; the insignia that identifies a disciple of Jesus. God is Love. The world cannot love because it is away from God. You cannot love unless God lives in you. Love toward people shows the world that Jesus is your king. Regardless of what the world does or how it treats each other, every follower of Jesus has their own mandate from the Lord concerning how we treat them.
Do you have love in your heart toward the world? Do you show that love toward the world? If hatred is in your heart or you cannot bring yourself to love certain people, then you have lost the mark of a disciple. Only loving those who love you is not the love of Christ. This is the same love the world has for its own. Jesus’ love shows love toward the unlovable. Is this the love that is in you?
Jesus made clear to His disciples the things that they would have to have in their life if they would be His disciple. Love is not just a suggestion for us, it is a commandment. The command to love will require you to forgive those who’ve wronged you. It will also require you to look deeply in your own heart and find the roots of why you cannot love. Sometimes it all adds up to one thing; to love people because you desire to follow Jesus. A person may not deserve your love, but do we deserve Jesus’ love for us?
