Following Jesus

Daily Devotion for Wednesday October 12th 2016

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. Matthew 4:18-20

In an age where the religious world is so confused, it has never been more important to be genuine followers of Jesus. If we were to really examine our lives, could we honestly say that we are truly a disciple or just another face in the crowd of religion? Being a disciple warrants us to give our lives; surrender ourselves unto the will of the Father. It means that we submit ourselves under the mighty hand of God and allow Him to mold and fashion us into the vessel He wants us to become.

Following Jesus accomplishes more than just an outward show of a change in us. If you choose to follow the Lord daily and are committed unto Him, you understand that God rewards faithfulness. God promotes those who are faithful. Following Jesus is the foundation of all things the Lord will work through you. In a time when Jesus could have gone to the most prestigious synagogues and found eloquent men, He rather chose men who did not fit the mold.

Remember that it was the no name fishermen who became great men of God. It was the sons of Alphaeus who became men used mightily of God. Their road, however, started with a simple call to be a disciple or follower of Jesus. Jesus is still yet calling today for men and women to learn of Him; not to learn of religion or not necessarily what a church may be teaching if it does not line up with true biblical discipleship.

The first disciples realized who Jesus was and desired to walk in such a sincere way as to please their king. He is so worthy of everything we could ever do for Him! Jesus said that He would make them fishers of men. Are you concerned about the lost souls of your generation? He said if we follow Him, He would make us fishers of men; I.e., soul winners. Can we look at our desire to win souls as evidence of whether We are following the Lord?
